Early
Treatment
Early treatment occurs when the child has both primary and adult teeth. Usually this is between ages 7-11. While not every patient requires early treatment, some problems are best managed at this age. We recommend all children come to see an orthodontist at this time because early diagnosis allows the orthodontist to help tooth eruption, guide facial growth and intercept serious problems before they occur. This may involve various kinds of plates or fitting braces on just a few teeth.
Teenage
Orthodontics
The majority of orthodontic treatment is completed in the teenage years. This usually involves braces or clear aligners (Invisalign). Treatment can often be completed without taking out any permanent teeth. At this stage, comprehensive treatment can move all teeth into their correct, healthy alignment and create a functional bite. Retainers are used to maintain the teeth in the desired position after treatment is completed, often for just a couple of years.
Adult
Orthodontics
It’s never too late to invest in orthodontic work! Treatment can be completed at any age, depending on the health of your teeth. Your straight smile can be achieved with a variety of braces or clear aligners, including invisible types if you’re feeling a little self-conscious. If necessary, we collaborate with other dental practitioners and specialists deliver a comprehensive treatment plan.
Orthodontic Treatment OPTIONS
Our state of the art treatment centre in Dandenong is equipped with the latest technology and our staff are trained in the latest orthodontic techniques. This allows us to offer our patients the best treatment experience possible. Discover more about our most common treatment types below:
Traditional Metal
or Clear Braces
Metal braces on the front of the teeth are the most commonly used appliances. These can be accessorized with different colors at each appointment. Usually these are chosen by child and teenager patients. Clear braces are transparent and made from ceramic. They are less obvious and often chosen by our adult patients. Both treatment styles can be used to treat any severity of orthodontic issue.
Clear
Aligners
Clear aligner therapy (CAT) uses digitally customized plastic trays or aligners which are changed over every 10-14 days. Each aligner moves the teeth a little bit and their clear material offers a very discreet way to straighten your teeth. This is a popular choice for adults undertaking orthodontic treatment or teens who are particularly self-conscious. Invisalign can be used to treat mild to moderate alignment issues.
Plates and
Expanders
For some more simple problems, particularly in younger children, plates or expanders may be used. These can often prevent more severe problems for developing. Sometimes, doing some early treatment can prevent the need for braces in the future.
Orthognathic
(Jaw) Surgery
If the upper and lower jaw size doesn’t match and the discrepancy is severe, orthodontic surgery may be required. In conjunction with an oromaxillofacial surgeon, a combined orthodontic and surgical approach may be used to create the best result. Often, surgery is followed by a period of traditional orthodontic treatment such as braces or a retainer.
Rapid
Treatment
Rapid treatment is available for simple, straight forward treatment. These cases may be just a quick straightening up of the teeth before a special occasion such a wedding or graduation. Rapid treatment techniques may also be recommended for patients who have had orthodontic treatment in the past but a few teeth have become crooked again over time.
