Children as young as seven can come to Orthodontic Specialists of Melbourne. Even before all of their adult teeth have erupted, we are able to assess and diagnose your child. If you’re considering bringing your child to see us for his or her complimentary consultation, here is some more information about what to expect, how to prepare and why early orthodontic treatment is so important.
Our first consultation with a new patient is completely free and holds no obligation. This is just a chance for us to assess your child’s teeth and for you and your child to get to know our friendly specialists. We are experienced working with young patients and make sure they are comfortable throughout the process. Explaining the treatment options and reasons for the process to both parents and child helps everyone to understand the importance of the entire treatment.
It is not necessary to wait until all of your child’s teeth have erupted before booking their first orthodontic appointment. In fact, it can be beneficial for their oral development for us to see them while some of their milk teeth are still in place. Thanks to x-ray technology, we are able to view and assess their adult teeth at this stage as well. We recommend all children come to see an orthodontist before their twelfth birthday to take advantage of our early treatment practices. However, the earlier the better and children as young as seven are welcome at Orthodontic Specialists of Melbourne.
Some children are apprehensive of orthodontic appointments, just as they are when visiting the dentist. However, there is nothing to be nervous about and you and your child can be reassured that these consultations are routine, non-invasive and relaxed experiences. It is always a good idea to discuss the process with your child before arriving, however, so that they feel included and informed as to what their appointment will involve. After all, it’s their teeth.
We believe it is important to get ahead of any necessary orthodontic treatments and early assessment and diagnosis allows us to do this. In most cases, children do not need to begin orthodontic treatment at such an early age. However, these appointments and the x-rays and data gathered allow us to predict how their adult teeth with develop in the future. Our training means we are able to spot developmental and growth problems. With early interception, any required treatment can not only be minimised but undergone at the optimum stage.
Even if your child’s teeth are not presenting any sign of needing assistance in their growth and alignment, we recommend you make an appointment. After all, it’s free so you have nothing to lose. Some orthodontic issues are also not immediately obvious to the untrained eye and may be missed without an expert assessment. To make an appointment for your child, call us today or fill out or contact form. We look forward to meeting you and your child very soon.
